About the
Photographer

Hello. I am Ryan Welsh. I bet you've already figured that part out, though.

Since you're viewing this page, I'll give you the basics: I am a male, mid-twenties, and I am of German-American descent. Although Deutschland-born, I have been raised an American my entire life, spending much of my early years on or around bases of the United States Air Force. Both my father, and mother, served. Coping with a few medical conditions in my early childhood, ranging from mysterious to serious, did a lot to shape who I would become. They also prevented me from continuing a family "tradition" of sorts to military service.

Perhaps as a result of that, I began my walk down the path of the Geek, instead. My talents have shifted dynamically during my time, with interests in the sciences, technology, writing, spirituality, and yes, photography. I liberated my first camera, an Olympus OM-2, from my father's closet during my early high-school years. I had taken it out many times in the past when he hadn't been watching, marveling at all the mechanical dials and rings, wondering what they did. Whenever I asked my mother about it, she told me it didn't work, that it hadn't for a long time. I tried, a few times, to see what was wrong with it.

One day at long last, replacing the batteries proved to be the key. Huh.

From my initital test roll - jumping straight to T-MAX black and white film - I saw a talent I had never realized before. Luckily, so did my parents. For the first time in my life they encouraged something artistic in my life. A few years later, they bought me a new camera, a Canon Rebel 2000. It was a nice camera, and I still own it, but I never really used it much for I felt drawn to the manual tactility of the old Olympus. It's still my camera of choice today, when I need to shoot 35mm.

Towards the beginning of this year, I finally made the jump to digital SLR photography. I'm now armed with a Nikon D80, which I'm still getting used to and developing technique for.

What I feel you must know about me as a photographer, however, is that I've never been formally trained. Many photographers haven't been. Despite wanting to during college, I wasn't able to afford (in time or funding) to attend photography classes, minor in photography, or take a double-major in it. At some point, I'd still love to take some, perhaps even get into film development. For now, I focus on my techniques, my portfolio, but most importantly getting some of the images swimming in my head out and visible in my work.

Thanks for stopping by. I hope you enjoy my work, and are possibly inspired by it.

Vibrate Me

If you'd like to phone me, raise the dead using the call button below. Just so we're clear, this next part confuses a lot of folks so pay attention and use logic: If the nice lady asks you to "state your name at the tone", you should...state your name at the tone. This is not the time to leave a voicemail. That will come after, if I don't answer.

Seriously. I hate to belittle like that, but everyone fails that test.

The number you connect to is a GrandCentral number. So if you'd like, connect now using the button below. You are more likely to get me than my voicemail if you uncheck the option to keep your number private.

   Booking

Below, I am embedding my photography booking calendar, which I do my best to maintain. But please understand it may not be current to the minute, and anything further out that 2-4 weeks may be blurry.
